In Forget Memory, author Anne Davis Basting argues that meaningful dementia care focuses on present circumstances in order to improve the lives of persons living with Alzheimer’s.
Using more than 10 years of research and practice-based experience, Basting provides a critique of current modes of dementia care and outlines examples of innovative programs that are based on efforts to stimulate growth, use humor, and make emotional connections with and for people living with Alzheimer’s. She translates a large body of medical research for dementia care providers and engages them in a critical discussion about how it can be used to make improvements in the care of people with dementia. In addition, she argues that popular myths about dementia stigmatize people living with the disease and that the cultural stereotypes about them often carry over into care.
Examples provided in the book include StoryCorps, dancing classes, and creative arts programs.
